Ukrainian is an East Slavic language spoken by about thirty-three million people in Ukraine and the diaspora, distinct from Russian in vocabulary, phonology, and morphology despite centuries of mutual contact. Within the Slavic family these languages share a deep stock of inherited words, comparable verb conjugation systems, and parallel ways of marking tense and aspect, all of which anchor the translation work.

Russian is a critical translation target for reaching 150 million native speakers and another 100 million second-language users across the former Soviet space, the eighth most spoken language globally. Ukrainian literature includes the national poet Taras Shevchenko, the modernist Lesya Ukrainka, and the contemporary writers Serhiy Zhadan and Oksana Zabuzhko. Russian is used across the Russian government, broadcasting, publishing, the substantial Russian gaming industry, post-Soviet regional content, and a global diaspora extending from Israel to Germany to the US.
