Japanese is a Japonic language spoken by about 125 million people in Japan, with a writing system combining two syllabaries and Han characters, and a literary tradition stretching back over a thousand years. Modern Standard Arabic is a critical translation target for reaching over four hundred million readers across the Arab League and a large global Muslim audience that uses Arabic for religious and formal contexts. When the source script is Kanji/Kana and the target script is Arabic, even punctuation conventions diverge — quotation marks, parenthetical asides, and emphasis often need substitution rather than direct translation.

Japanese literature includes the eleventh-century Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu (often called the world's first novel), Basho's haiku, and Nobel laureates Kawabata, Oe, and Ishiguro. Arabic serves as the formal written language across twenty-two Arab states and is widely used in Islamic scholarship, journalism, and pan-Arab broadcasting.
