Vietnamese is the Austroasiatic language of Vietnam, spoken by about eighty-five million people, distinguished by six tones and an ingenious Latin-based alphabet that replaced traditional Han characters in the early twentieth century. Arabic serves as the formal written language across twenty-two Arab states and is widely used in Islamic scholarship, journalism, and pan-Arab broadcasting.
