Azerbaijani is a Turkic language spoken by around twenty-three million people in Azerbaijan and northwestern Iran, mutually intelligible with Turkish and historically influenced by Persian and Russian. The leap from Turkic to Germanic is significant: cultural metaphors, kinship terminology, and grammatical categories rarely line up, so a faithful translation often becomes an act of cultural mediation as much as linguistic substitution.
