Afrikaans is a West Germanic language spoken by roughly seven million native speakers in South Africa and Namibia, descended from the Dutch of seventeenth-century settlers and shaped by indigenous African and Malay influences. Afrikaans literature took shape in the late nineteenth century and produced Nobel-laureate-adjacent figures like Etienne Leroux and the poet Ingrid Jonker, whose work Mandela later quoted at his inauguration. Basque is used in Basque autonomous government, schools (ikastolak), regional broadcasting (EITB), and a growing Basque-language internet.
