Vietnamese is the Austroasiatic language of Vietnam, spoken by about eighty-five million people, distinguished by six tones and an ingenious Latin-based alphabet that replaced traditional Han characters in the early twentieth century. The leap from Austroasiatic to Romance is significant: cultural metaphors, kinship terminology, and grammatical categories rarely line up, so a faithful translation often becomes an act of cultural mediation as much as linguistic substitution.

French is used as a working language at the UN, EU, and dozens of international bodies, plus extensive publishing, media, and government use across the global Francophonie.
