Indonesian is a Malay-based national language spoken by about forty-three million people as a first language and another 156 million as a second language, the lingua franca of Indonesia's seventeen thousand islands. Indonesian literature includes the colonial-era poet Chairil Anwar, the novelist Pramoedya Ananta Toer (perennially Nobel-shortlisted), and Eka Kurniawan. Simplified Chinese is the universal written form for mainland China's media, publishing, government, education, and the world's largest e-commerce and social media platforms.
