Afrikaans is a West Germanic language spoken by roughly seven million native speakers in South Africa and Namibia, descended from the Dutch of seventeenth-century settlers and shaped by indigenous African and Malay influences. Burmese is used in Myanmar government, broadcasting, education, and a recovering literary publishing scene.
