Belarusian is an East Slavic language spoken natively by about five million people in Belarus, closely related to Russian and Ukrainian and shaped by centuries of Polish and Lithuanian cultural influence. Crossing from the Slavic family into the Germanic family requires the translator to rebuild grammatical scaffolding from scratch, since these branches diverged thousands of years ago and share little inherited vocabulary.

Afrikaans is a useful translation target for reaching the South African and Namibian markets, with about seven million native speakers and millions more who understand it as a regional second language. The Cyrillic-to-Latin transition is mostly mechanical for most letters but requires editorial judgment for proper nouns whose romanization has competing standards across academic, journalistic, and library contexts.

Belarusian literature flowered in the early twentieth century with poets Yanka Kupala and Yakub Kolas, and continues through Nobel laureate Svetlana Alexievich's documentary works. Afrikaans is used daily in South African media, literature, and as a home language for several ethnic communities, including white Afrikaners and Coloured South Africans.
