Afrikaans is a West Germanic language spoken by roughly seven million native speakers in South Africa and Namibia, descended from the Dutch of seventeenth-century settlers and shaped by indigenous African and Malay influences. Basque is used in Basque autonomous government, schools (ikastolak), regional broadcasting (EITB), and a growing Basque-language internet.
